Boothstown in Lancashire was the focal point for many emigrants from Co. Galway. If a friend or relative had accomodation and work was available in the area, it was the start of a new life for many families.
The main source of work was the coal industry and it must have been something of a culture shock to be working under the ground instead of on it.

There is an excelent website giving the history of Boothstown.
